New Belgium Brewery’s Lips of Faith Show Their Affection for Red Rock Brewery in Salt Lake City.
New Belgium Brewery (Fort Collins, CO) has selected Red Rock Brewing Company (Salt Lake City, UT) to collaborate in their much loved Lips of Faith series. They’re brewing a 42,267 gallon interpretation of Red Rock’s Gold Medal winning beer called Paardebloem (a Flemish term for Dandelion). The beers’ recipe calls for the use dandelion greens in place of hops as a bitter.
Lips of Faith is the name of New Belgium’s experimental beer program that relies on innovative brewing ideas that come through the ranks of the employees.
The company organizes blind tastings and brewing competitions throughout the year, looking for beer ideas. The winning entry gets the honor of brewing a Lips of Faith Beer that will be shared with beer lovers around the country. It’s New Belgium’s way of demonstrating faith in their employees and supporting their passion for making delicious craft beer.
The Paardebloem beer was introduced to New Belgium by Chris McCombs, a former Red Rock brewer who is now the Plant Engineer at New Belgium. He was a co-conspirator with Red Rock’s Kevin Templin in creating this experimental Belgian Style Ale.
It’s made with toasted Pilsner malt, grains of paradise, peaches, fresh picked dandelion greens and is blended with a some wood-aged beer. It has a hazy, deep golden color, a soft-toasted malt character. It contains 9.2% alcohol by volume and is available in 22oz bottles while supplies last.
“This is a huge honor for us”, said Kevin Templin, Head Brewer at Red Rock Brewing Co. “New Belgium is an amazing brewery. They have a beautiful set-up. They’re one of the best craft brewers in the country”.
Templin, along with Chris Harlin and Erica Palmer from Red Rock, made the trip from Salt Lake City to Ft. Collins in February to lend a hand in the brewing process. “We showed up at the brewery about 5:15am. We pulled apart about 1,000 pounds of dandelion greens and worked with the brewers until about 6:00pm. We were all hurting.”
New Belgium will distribute Paardebloem to select locations around the country. In Utah, Paardebloem will be sold exclusively at Red Rock Brewery locations in downtown Salt Lake City, Fashion Place, and the Park City Junction.
